Constructed in the 1950s, these two housing complexes on the University of Kentucky’s main campus were in need of major renovation. Both complexes contained efficiency, one-bedroom and two-bedroom apartments: Shawneetown with 186 apartment units in six buildings and Cooperstown with 330 units in seven buildings.

An inspection revealed that the existing HVAC system no longer met modern standards for heating and cooling. The old system was removed and replaced. New mechanical and fire protection systems were also installed, with careful consideration for ease of maintenance and individual tenant control with minimal intrusion of those systems into existing structures.

Both the kitchen renovations and the installation of new finishes focused on ease of maintenance and durability of materials.

As architect and agent of the owner, RossTarrant Architects worked closely with contractors and users to develop and achieve an ambitious schedule. The project called for a limited number of units to be under construction at one time, thus requiring a quick turnaround. The successful completion of the project was the result of a high level of communication, coordination and responsiveness on the part of all project team members. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
