Higher School Design Standards Receive Recognition

LEXINGTON – The Kentucky Society of Architects recognized the value of improved educational design for public schools throughout Kentucky in their award ceremony November 12 in Lexington. Mark W. Ryles, AIA, the Director of Facilities Management for the Kentucky Department of Education was presented with the Allied Professional Award for his leadership over the past 10 years which has resulted in unparalleled changes in the development of school project delivery and funding. Through innovative funding concepts, development of Best Practices for School Building Projects, and implementation of improved contracting and construction-related requirements, he has guided his agency in addressing many of the challenges created by the current fiscal environment.

In the same evening, Whitley Central Intermediate School’s design by Ross-Tarrant Architects received the 2004 Merit Award for excellence in architectural design. The award is the first presented to a public elementary school project since 1975. The Honor Awards Program of AIA Kentucky—the Kentucky Society of Architects—recognized five projects in this year’s competition. The awards, which seek to recognize and honor distinctive works of architecture, are viewed as one of the highest honors for a Kentucky architect and are selected by a jury of architectural peers.
