Franklin County High School and Western Hills High School are both located within Franklin County, Kentucky on multi-school campuses. Each had athletic facilities that were in need of upgrade and development.
RossTarrant Architects redesigned the existing track from 6-lane to a competition level 8-lane track with cushioned surfacing, adding new bleachers and rebuilding the track subsurface, surface and drainage. In addition, a new eight court competition level tennis complex was designed and built to replace the old four court complex which was in disrepair and inconveniently located. The new courts are night lighted and easily accessible, increasing the already high participation in tennis at the school. All of this was accomplished with very limited available land area.
The existing track at Western Hills High School was to be resurfaced, but wet conditions found beneath the original track indicated a complete rebuilding to accommodate the desired cushioned surface. The new eight court competition level tennis complex for this school was sited at the crest of a hill along the approach driveway through the campus, is lighted for night play and is a welcome and attractive addition to the existing athletic facilities.
An important aspect of the construction was that great effort was made to reuse existing surface material (milled and reused asphalt) and to greatly improve drainage for the tracks and football fields within.
