Grant County Sherman Campus Master Plan

Grant County Sherman Campus Master Plan

Faced with steady growth and overcrowded schools, the Grant County Board of Education sought to develop a new 76-acre campus that would accommodate three new schools for the district. The masterplan for the new campus incorporates an elementary for preschool through fifth grades, a middle school for grades six through eight and a high school for ninth through twelfth graders.

In addition to siting the three schools, the masterplan addressed campus athletics facilities including baseball, softball, soccer, track, football and two practice fields. A field house and alternative school were incorporated into the plan. Parking and site circulation was planned to accommodate the needs of all three schools as well as the athletics facilities. Ultimately, a large boulevard was designed to serve as the main entrance to the site while preserving existing trees and yet accommodating the anticipated amount of traffic generated by the entire campus. Utilities were planned and sized to enable the economical addition of buildings that will be added to the campus in future phases.

There were several challenges in developing a masterplan for the new campus. First, the topography of the 76-acre site was extremely hilly, which severely limited the available space on which buildings could be located and led to drainage and stormwater challenges. A historic tavern and several surrounding buildings already located on the site also had to be incorporated into the campus. The final masterplan was successful in overcoming the challenges posed by the picturesque site and resulted in a clear and thorough vision for the new campus.
