Berea College Alumni Dining Hall Renovation

With the goal of creating a more enlivened space for student dining, Berea College sought an environmentally sustainable renovation of its Alumni Building Dining Hall. The phased renovation addressed the serving area and two adjacent dining halls.

Two servings lines were added, one of which was for desserts. The second bar was designed to be a “sustainability bar,” featuring locally grown and harvested foods. A pizza serving counter was designed to display and serve pizzas fired in a newly installed pizza

oven.

The large dining hall was refinished and accented with soffits and lighting to brighten and update the space. The small dining hall was designed to double as a social gathering space that would remain active after food service hours. Circular booths were used to create a center island within the hall to create a more dynamic, enlivened atmosphere. Pendant lighting was used to accent various

components of the space, including the center island, a small area of lounge seating and the service counters. Additional seating was designed to take advantage of the natural light available through large expanses of glass providing attractive views outdoors.

In keeping with the College’s commitment to environmental

sustainability, all materials and furnishings were carefully selected taking into consideration their content, manufacturing process and the transportation required to procure them.
