Cartmell Elementary Renovation & Addition

Cartmell Elementary School, which serves grades three through five, was in need of a major renovation and addition. A new gymnasium was created to enable what was previously a shared cafeteria and gym to be renovated into a dedicated cafeteria space with flexible seating and an attractive cafe theme. The media center, which was extremely undersized, was expanded and completely renovated. The result is a space flooded in soft, natural light with updated, comfortable furnishings and energizing colors.

Throughout the entire facility, classrooms were renovated with new finishes and interactive white boards. Restrooms and support spaces received new finishes and fixtures. An addition to the building provided space for a new administrative suite with security entry vestibule and gym lobby. The previous administrative offices were converted into a new art room and broadcast studio for a student produced news program.

Outside the school, the circulation pattern was transformed to provide a new student and visitor entrance. An outdoor classroom was created outside the media center with seatwalls and native plantings.

The entire building was also brought up to meet ADA requirements and received all new HVAC and plumbing. An interactive energy monitoring system enables students to track their energy use. The renovation saved the District $62,000 in energy costs just during the first year.
