Whitley Central Intermediate School

This intermediate school is the new face for the district and the symbolic entrance to the nearby main school campus. Designers took a severely sloping site and developed a unique two-level plan that enabled the separation of academic areas from high-activity common areas.

Each grade level was given its own wing on the upper level with a unique identity reinforced with bright graphics and signage. The media center was located at the front of the building, emphasizing its importance in the role of education. The lower floor houses the gymnasium and cafeteria, divided by an outdoor courtyard area that serves multiple functions.

Safety and security were also important concerns. The main entry and bus loop have separate entrances, and all traffic is directed away from outdoor learning and activity areas. The two-story lobby contains an open stairway which enables the administrative area to monitor all visitor activity within the school.
