Bourbon County Middle School Addition & Renovation

The Bourbon County Board of Education wished to address several issues with the addition and renovation project at Bourbon County Middle School. Originally built in the 1940s and later expanded in the 1960s, the facility had several deficienciesâ€”lack of capacity, energy-efficiency, and cohesive image.

Interior renovations focused on the KERA requirements for functionality. Programming was designed so that each grade was separated on its own floor with corresponding spaces located for convenient access.

Exterior improvements included encapsulation and removal of lead-based paint, replacement of existing windows, removal of the curtain-wall system, and replacement of the existing roof. Both the selection of new windows and the recladding of the existing curtain-wall with brick and block improved the energy efficiency of the building while maintaining the classical architecture of the original building and giving it a cohesive image.
