University of Kentucky Shively Track & Field Renovation

University of Kentucky Shively Track & Field Renovation

The University of Kentucky’s Shively Track, used by the men’s and women’s track and cross country teams, was over 30 years old and in need of renovation. The entire track and field facility was comprehensively renovated including new track and field surfaces, field event training areas, newly designed spectator seating, all spectator amenities (concessions, restrooms, etc.), and equipment storage.

The new track is a nine-lane synthetic surface track with a grass infield. An athlete-only practice throw area was integrated into the site plan, providing safety for adjacent spectators as well as providing a proper environment for the training and warm up of student athletes. This area also accommodates visiting track teams during meet events.

The architectural design and materials were integrated to enhance the proximity to the design elements of the University’s adjacent baseball stadium. The concession building was conveniently located to the track giving spectators easy access during event completion. A new storage facility was also provided to store all track and field equipment.

Pedestrian walkways were constructed of permeable pavers to mitigate stormwater runoff and divert excess water from the track surface.
