Buckhorn School Addition & Renovation

Buckhorn School Addition & Renovation

Originally built in 1964, Buckhorn School serves preschool through twelfth grade. Steady growth in the school’s enrollment led it to outgrow the facility’s capacity, so beginning in 1998, the Perry County Board of Education began to expand the school to accommodate the increasing student population. A phased approach was employed to prevent the disruption of classes and enable the district to procure the necessary funds.

First, standard classrooms were added for primary and middle grade levels to replace the portable classrooms being temporarily utilized as a solution to the space shortage. In 2005, a new high school wing was added, which included standard classrooms as well as lab areas for science, family and consumer science, and computer technology. This addition also included a new kitchen and serving area. The addition was designed to replace an existing classroom wing that was beyond repair.

Finally, in 2007 the existing main classroom wing was demolished to create space for a new media center, administrative area, and a multi-purpose cafeteria/practice gym. This new infill addition linked the primary and secondary wings of the building as well as the existing performance gym enabling all grades to share the newly created common spaces in between.

A fourth phase of the expansion is planned to complete the masterplan for the campus. This phase will expand the current administration area and add speciality classrooms for art, music, ROTC and special needs classes.
