A steadily growing district faced with already overcrowded schools, the Garrard County Board of Education opted to build a new high school and redistribute its student population to alleviate overcrowding.
Goals for the new facility included a 117,000 square foot, well functioning building with easy access to amenities and efficient circulation and parking. Phased development includes sports fields, courts and amenities which allow the district to utilize the entire site as a learning environment. Sports and fitness amenities, along with a comprehensive agricultural program and facilities, are planned to include participation by the community. Also included are a field house and training building, with a competition level gymnasium.
Extensive outdoor learning areas were developed to include seating plazas, gardens, an amphitheater, science stations, and outdoor art area. The main outdoor classroom is accessed from the media center with views looking out over the site.
Extensive native plantings were used throughout the site in general as well as for the development of a rain garden. A one-mile trail system covering the entire campus is also planned as well as a new greenhouse and head house with adjacent space
Development was designed to protect and preserve the effectiveness of an existing stream that runs along the longest edge of the property. The design resolved stormwater impacts to neighboring properties with the use of check dams, ponds, and infiltration systems.
