Eastern Kentucky University Thomas E. McDonough Intramural Fields & Field House

The project involves the complete renovation and expansion of the campus’s existing intramural fields complex. The original space provided an overlaying combination of a three softball fields, one soccer field and five flag football fields on a terraced complex with more than 20-feet of grade change between fields. The University sought to regrade the heavily terraced space to allow for the expansion of the facilities to include additional fields, lighting, irrigation, ADA access and a building to serve as a field house.

The renovation and expansion created the necessary space for an overlaying combination of four softball, four soccer and eight flag football fields as well as a competition sand volleyball court, and a building for restrooms, equipment checkout, vending, storage, and lighting and irrigation controls.

Grading was designed to allow the fields to overlap in order to accommodate the limited available space without affecting the seasonal uses, to be rotated to even the wear and tear on the turf, and to provide ADA and emergency vehicle access. In addition, one quadrant was converted to a synthetic turf field to allow it to be used year-round and during inclement weather conditions without damage to the natural turf fields. The irrigation and lighting systems will allow for extended use of the complex while maintaining a safer and better maintained playing surface. Controls for the lighting and irrigation are located in the field house building while controls for the

sand volleyball court are on a manual timer that can be accessed and used when all other lighting systems are off thus giving students the ability to utilize the volleyball court on weekends.
