Originally constructed in the 1960’s, the Schmidt Vocal Arts Center was in need of a renovation to better accommodate the needs of the nationally acclaimed University of Kentucky Opera Program. Primary goals of the renovation included creating a top-notch rehearsal space and adding an elevator for access to the second floor. In addition, a new entry lobby was created, providing a much needed gathering place for students, faculty and visitors.
The second floor of the building, which was formerly an uninhabited shell space, was renovated to accommodate the new rehearsal room. The rehearsal space, which doubles as a black box theater, features a sprung ballet floor and theater lighting. Two new rest rooms were added to the second floor.
Several building systems were addressed in the renovation including the addition of spray-in-place insulation to all exterior walls on the second floor and attic and new HVAC and electrical systems to support the newly renovated spaces upstairs.
