Estill County High School’s condition had deteriorated significantly and the Estill County Board of Education sought a renovation and addition that would not only address the school’s condition but provide the additional space needed for it’s growing population.

Construction was carefully planned and phased to minimize the disruption of classes. The first two phases replaced all windows and upgraded the HVAC. The third phase of construction was far more comprehensive.

First, an in-fill addition was designed to connect the main education building with what was previously a stand-alone gymnasium and freshman academy, eliminating the need for students to travel outside in inclement weather. The addition was carefully designed to provide a connection between two separate buildings at different elevations. New state-of-the art science and technology classrooms and labs were designed for the addition, allowing existing science classrooms to be renovated into much needed additional standard classrooms.

In the existing media center, new windows were designed to bathe the space in soft, natural light and a new circulation desk was centrally located to enable staff to better monitor the space. The school’s auditorium was fully renovated including new seats and finishes throughout, as well as an ADA lift and control booth. The cafeteria was greatly expanded, doubling the height of the space to bring natural light deeper into the building. New seating configurations were designed to provide students with a more sophisticated eating environment.

Finally, an entry canopy was added to the front of the school to more clearly identify the main entrance. The result is a brand new identity for a school that has been completely transformed to become the pride of the community.
