Arlington Elementary School Addition & Renovation

Originally constructed in 1934, historic Arlington Elementary school was in need of a renovation and addition to enable the school to better support a growing student population.

Renovations are predominately focused on addressing life safety and ADA accessibility issues throughout the school. Other improvements include the addition of high-performance insulation to the buildingâ€™s exterior walls and the replacement of an outdated HVAC system with a new, highly efficient system.

A sensitive addition was designed to preserve and enhance the historic charm of the 1930â€™s structure and its surrounding neighborhood. The addition will provide space for a new front entry and administrative suite near the front of the building, significantly improving school security. A new media center, kitchen and cafeteria will also be added, along with two computer laboratories. A large, highly structured classrooms suite will also be included. In total, 25 classrooms will be completely renovated or added to the building, providing students with state-of-the-art learning spaces and technology systems.

Several modifications were also made to the extremely small site on which the school is located. An outdoor classroom and performance space was designed adjacent to the Media Center providing an attractive space that can be shared by the school and its surrounding community. Grading and an underground storm retention basin were designed to mitigate the storm water runoff problem that had previously plagued the school.
