Originally constructed in 1993, Southwestern High School was no longer able to accommodate the needs of its growing student body. The district opted to embark on an addition & renovation project that would create a new Freshman Academy for incoming students.
The addition is designed to provide space for 350 additional students. It will include 12 standard classrooms, two science classrooms, a computer lab, 6 resource rooms, an administrative suite and new student restrooms. The addition will also enlarge the cafeteria to enable it to accommodate a capacity of 400 during a single lunch period. All additions to the building were carefully designed to reflect the existing architecture of the building.
A number of renovations are planned for the existing facility to compliment the newly added space. The cafeteria serving area will be renovated and redesigned to more closely resemble a food court. The existing administrative area and science classrooms and laboratories will be fully renovated as well.
Exterior site work includes the modification and redesign of all existing parking and traffic circulation patterns and the addition of supplementary parking. Finally, the bleachers on the home side of the football field will be expanded to accommodate 1,500 spectators.
