Morehead State University Mays and Butler Hall Renovations

Mays and Butler Halls were typical 1930s dormitory facilities which had been neglected for years. The first floor had been used for overflow office space and storage, while the upper floors had been abandoned. Exterior maintenance had also been neglected over the years. Morehead State University expressed a desire to incorporate a design concept for Mays Hall that would change the traditional residence hall to a facility that was unique, offered privacy for occupants and, most importantly, was flexible and would easily adapt to shifts in enrollment.

The hall was redesigned to serve as a modified single-sex or coed hall with suites designed for four to six persons and single rooms designed for two people. The top three floors consisted of two- and three-room efficiency apartments/suites complete with bath and kitchenette, and one-room units with self-contained bath and toilet facilities located on the ground floor. Each unit also included individual climate controls, television, telephone and computer outlets, and an intercom system connected to the lobby and front entrance.

The building was brought into compliance with both building codes and the ADA. Mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems were replaced, and an elevator was installed.
